Hiromi's Sonicwonder is a jazz fusion quartet led by acclaimed Japanese pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara. Known for its energetic blend of jazz, funk, rock, and classical influences, the group represents a recent evolution in Hiromi’s dynamic and ever-changing musical journey.
The genesis of Sonicwonder began in 2016 when bassist Hadrien Feraud substituted for Anthony Jackson in Hiromi’s trio. Feraud’s chemistry with Hiromi was immediate, and his Los Angeles base, along with drummer Gene Coye (whom Hiromi met while playing with the Stanley Clarke Band), formed the heart of the rhythm section. Feraud and Coye had already played together extensively, which Hiromi considered crucial for the group’s cohesion.
Seeking a unique sound, Hiromi envisioned a trumpet voice with a rich low mid-range. After discovering Adam O’Farrill online, she invited him for a jam session, completing the lineup.
Band Members:- Hiromi Uehara – piano, keyboards, synthesizers- Hadrien Feraud – electric bass- Gene Coye – drums- Adam O’Farrill – trumpet
Sonicwonder is described as an extension of Hiromi’s electric side, with a substantial focus on electronic timbres and synthesizers. Hiromi employs instruments like the Nord Lead A1 analog modeling synthesizer and Nord Electro 5D, which influence her compositional style and the group’s sound. The band’s music is characterized by:- Jazz-rock fusion- Classically rooted virtuosity- Funk and pop elements- Acoustic jazz
Their interplay is notable for deep chemistry and a fearless, improvisational spirit.
Hiromi’s approach with Sonicwonder is rooted in curiosity and exploration. She writes music specifically for the strengths of her bandmates, allowing their personalities and talents to shape the group’s sound. She distinguishes her “sonic” projects by their use of electronics and keyboards, as opposed to her more acoustic-focused ensembles. Writing on synthesizers leads her to create music distinct from her piano-based compositions.
Hiromi has a history of forming innovative ensembles, such as Hiromi’s Sonicbloom (with guitarist Dave Fiuczynski), which also explored electronic and fusion elements. Sonicwonder represents a new chapter, with a fresh lineup and a renewed focus on electronic textures and group interplay. Over her 20+ year career, Hiromi has become a global ambassador for jazz, known for her technical brilliance, genre-blending compositions, and dynamic live performances.
Sonicwonder has been praised for enhancing Hiromi’s musical alchemy, with critics noting the group’s “fun, thoughtful, and wild musical ride,” and the deep chemistry among its members.
