The New Mastersounds

The New Mastersounds are a dynamic British four-piece band known for their jazz fusion and funk influences, having taken the scene by storm since their formation in Leeds, England, in 1999. With a sound deeply rooted in the classic soul-jazz and funk of the 1960s and 70s, the band has captivated audiences worldwide, particularly with their infectious instrumental grooves.

Background and Formation

Formed by Eddie Roberts, who sought to create a band complementing the DJ sets at his club night "The Cooker" in Leeds, the original lineup featured Eddie Roberts on guitar, Simon Allen on drums, Pete Shand on bass, and Bob Birch on keyboards. Roberts and Allen had played together since 1997 in The Mastersounds before reconfiguring the group in its current form. In 2007, the band welcomed Joe Tatton, who took over the role of keyboardist.

Musical Style

The New Mastersounds draw strong inspiration from iconic artists such as The Meters, Booker T and the MGs, James Brown's rhythm sections, and the broader jazz-funk fusion genre. Their music is characterized by instrumental funk grooves primarily driven by the interplay between guitar, organ, bass, and drums.
