Lakecia Benjamin is a highly acclaimed American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader known for her dynamic fusion of jazz, funk, R&B, hip-hop, and soul. Her career is marked by a blend of deep jazz roots, electrifying stage presence, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary music.
Born and raised in Washington Heights, New York City, Benjamin grew up in a predominantly Dominican neighborhood, surrounded by Latin music such as merengue and salsa, which influenced her early musical development. She began playing the recorder in grade school, started writing songs and lyrics at age 13, and picked up the saxophone in elementary school. She continued to hone her skills at Eleanor Roosevelt Junior High School. Her passion for jazz was ignited at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts.
After high school, she attended the renowned jazz program at The New School University in New York City.
Even as a student, Benjamin was performing with jazz legends like Clark Terry and Reggie Workman, which opened avenues to collaborations with artists such as Rashied Ali, James Blood Ulmer, Vanessa Rubin, and the David Murray Big Band. She has worked as an arranger and horn section leader for major artists, including:- Stevie Wonder- Alicia Keys- Macy Gray- Kool and the Gang- Anita Baker
Benjamin has performed with a wide array of artists across genres, such as Missy Elliott, Talib Kweli, Santigold, DJ Premier, and The Roots. She has played on four continents and performed at significant events like President Barack Obama’s 2009 Inauguration.
Benjamin leads her own band, Soul Squad, which is known for blending the vintage sounds of:- James Brown- Maceo Parker- Sly and the Family Stone- The Meters
These are interwoven with modern jazz, funk, and dance rhythms. Her music is characterized by a sultry alto saxophone, energetic grooves, and a seamless integration of classic and contemporary influences, creating a unique and compelling sound.
Benjamin has been recognized as a Rising Star Alto Saxophonist in the 2020 DownBeat Critics Poll and was named Up and Coming Artist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. In 2023, she was honored as the Library of Congress Jazz Scholar, highlighting her impact and leadership in the jazz community.
